How to Stay Safe at Summer Festivals with these Small Tips

Excitement is rising all across the city with large annual festivals and events making an in-person return this Summer! As Summer festivals in Toronto prepare themselves for their grand return, we want to prepare you with a quick refresher. Here are a few small safety tips to make the most of your Summer festival experience.

1. Stay Hydrated!

When spending long hours in the sun, you are bound to become dehydrated or even worse, fatigued. Packing a cooler of ice and water or bringing a reusable water bottle may be helpful, however, the trick to staying hydrated is in ensuring you are having constant and frequent sips throughout the day.

2. Get your booze on responsibly

“Drinking” is a popular activity at many Summer festivals and for those who decide to partake, doing so responsibly will help you to get the most out of your festival experience. Following our first tip will help make this one a lot easier! As alcohol can leave you a bit dehydrated, mixing things up with water is key. Keeping a count and careful watch of what you are drinking will also help you avoid any unfortunate encounters like an overdose or spiked drink.

3. Create a communication plan

Whether you are attending a Summer festival alone or with a group of friends, communication is key! Sharing your location with someone you trust, exchanging numbers or even creating a group chat will help you to conveniently keep tabs on everyone in the case of an emergency. Bear in mind, having a central designated meet up spot is also necessary in the event that you or anyone is not able to touch base via phone.

4. Prioritize protecting your skin

Though Summer brings the warm weather, it also brings painful sunburn which leaves protecting your skin one of our top safety tips. Midday sun is no joke and with sun rays being their strongest between 10am and 4pm, umbrellas, hats and UVA/UVB protective sunglasses are essentials. Added to this, a broad-spectrum sunscreen that’s water resistant with a 30+ SPF is every person’s summertime best friend!

5. Always be alert!

When you’re at a Summer festival with good vibes and good food, it’s easy to become zoned out of everything else around you but nothing compares to the empty gut feeling when you realize your wallet or phone is missing! Pick pocketers are prevalent in crowded events, hence it’s important to only bring what you need and carefully supervise your valuables by keeping them in front and well secured pockets.
